The Issues

WHAT DO SURVIVORS SEEK THE MOST?

According to the findings of Dr. Judith Herman (2005), survivors of sexual violence seek validation of their experience. Validation of their experience includes acknowledgement of the offense, and vindication for the offense by having the community take a stance against rape as a social injustice.

Dr. Judith Lewis Herman is a Harvard Professor, psychiatrist, and renowned trauma specialist. Her study, “Justice from the Victim’s Perspective,” was published in 2005 in the journal, Violence Against Women.
